July 14, 2010 - The Boss Gets Fired

george steinbrenner dies
It's strange how perceptions can change so suddenly when you die. It seems even the most hardcore Red Sox fans are pretending to like George Steinbrenner right about now, after the Yankees owner died yesterday morning of a massive heart attack. Even Billy Martin, who Steinbrenner fired approximately 20+ times or so, sent his condolences from the afterlife. All that stuff about Steinbrenner being an insufferable boss...well, give it a couple years before you pick that conversation back up.
post-katrina shooting charges
It may have always seemed that in the first few days of the post-Katrina world, New Orleans was governed by a vigilante justice of sorts, but apparently, order has been restored retroactively, as 4 officers and 2 supervisers have been charged with wrongdoing in relation to shootings of a disabled man and a teenager in the days following Katrina. It only took about four years to establish those charges, which in BP terms is basically like overnight.
barefoot bandit returned to US
Local hero of the Pacific Northwest, aka the barefoot bandit, aka the crazy teenager parading around the Carribean commiting crimes, will be returned to the United States to face prosecution for a variety of charges following his escape from a Seattle-area halfway house 2 years ago. To be fair to the young man, it appears he may have changed his ways, as he was spotted wearing shoes to his hearing in the Bahamas yesterday.
ground zero mosque hearings
Hearings by the landmarks commission in New York City to decide whether or not they will allow a mosque to be built near the site of the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Centers were opened to the public, and turned "raucous" yesterday. Of course, walking down a New York street in the summer can turn "raucous," so I guess this story really isn't all that surprising.
all-star game
Baseball fans were treated to all kinds of unusual things at Tueday night's All-Star game in Anaheim. Of course, the game ended up at a score of 3-1, low-scoring by most standards, and especially for a game of All-Stars, but even stranger, the National League won for the first time in 14 years. Maybe Steinbrenner had a curse on them or something?

beer truck wreck pictures
Hide the women and children! The carnage in these pictures is enough to make a semi-alcoholic grown man cry.

drunk man bitten by crocodile
I don't know how they do things in Australia, but here in America, you would get sued for not having a "Do Not Sit On" warning sign on your crocodile.
10 signs of fear-based workplace
Do you work in a fear-based workplace? Surprisingly, the number one sign that you do has nothing to do with working with clowns.
iphone 4 backlash
Apparently, the iPhone 4 has been experiencing a lot of complaints…meaning you only have to get up at 5am to head to the Apple store to get one.
intense charity golf tourney
Steroid-fueled charity golf tournament hosted by Vikings stud Jared Allen includes slip n' slides and angry marines…hey, it was for a good cause.

The Poor Little Rich Boy...I am still trying to figure out if that is supposed to be a compliment for old George. I guess there is only one way to find out, and that is by reading this entire book.

  1. Dude the Barefoot Bandit stole a vehicle 15 miles from where I live in Iowa and drove it somewhere in Illinois. I am going to miss reading his headlines.

Also, the reaction to Steinbrenner's death has amused me. When he was alive, all I heard was negative things about him. Now that he is dead I am repeatedly being reminded by people on television about how great of a guy he was.

I like what you said about the Steinbrenner curse on the All-Star game.

  2. You mean you had a chance to capture the Barefoot Bandit, and you missed it!
Don't worry, I think there are Facebook groups devoted to freeing the Barefoot Bandit so he can go on another spree...kinda like when DiCaprio hopped out of the plane at the end of Catch Me If You Can.
